Course Description
Only judges can approve attorney fee awards.  A panel of sitting federal judges address a range of issues on awarding attorney fees and expenses in large, complex federal litigation.  Panelists discuss the nuts and bolts of attorney fee awards including fee calculation methods, attorney fee award factors, establishing hourly rates, attorney fee disputes, attorney fee allocation issues, and more.  Panelists also offer judicial insight on attorney fee requests and provide practice tips for fee-seeking and fee-challenging litigators.  Course materials included.

Every new year, hourly rates must be examined and justified.  In litigation, hourly rates remain the most important and ever-present economic variable.  Our panel of experts have a substantive discussion on the factors that determine prevailing market hourly rates for partners, associates, and staff attorneys. Despite the American Rule, fee-shifting litigation is prevalent throughout the U.S.  A panel of some of the nation's top litigators address a range of issues that arise in large, complex fee-shifting litigation.  Panelists discuss the different types of fee-shifting provisions and statutes, prevailing party issues, and winning and defeating prevailing party fee claims in court.  Panelists also consider fee entitlement issues, fees as sanctions or damages, use of fee experts, and methods for calculating reasonable prevailing party fees and expenses.
