NALFA Membership Network

NALFA is building a worldwide network of attorney fee expertise in litigation.  We are an organization for litigators interested in ethical billing practices and reasonable and reliable attorney fee data.  Qualification in our membership network is based on experience, education, and certification.  Our professional membership network includes:

  • Members:  Our members include fully qualified attorney fee experts.  Our members also include court adjuncts such as bankruptcy fee examiners, special masters, and fee dispute neutrals.  To qualify for membership, litigators must demonstrate substantial expertise on attorney fee and legal billing matters in a few litigation practice areas.  All our members have faculty standing.  This category of membership is by invitation only.  Annual membership dues are $4500.
  • Faculty:  Our faculty members have taught a curriculum of jurisprudence on ethical billing and reasonable fees.  They include fellows who have served as panelists in our CLE programs.  Faculty membership is $700 (one-time course fees) and $800 in annual faculty dues to maintain faculty standing.
  • Fellows: Our fellows are litigators or others who have completed a curriculum of jurisprudence on ethical billing and reasonable fees.  All our fellows have faculty standing.  Fellowship is $700 (one-time course fees) and $800 in annual fellowship dues to maintain fellowship standing.
  • Subscribers: Our subscribers include active, full-time litigators (≥50% of their practice devoted to litigation), and/or survey participants.  This subscription service includes being one of the first to receive our annual billing rate survey data, access to our News Blog, and discounts on our CLE programs.  This subscription service is only $10 per month.  You can opt-out after one year. Qualified litigators who subscribe for more than 2 years and register for at least 2 of our CLE Ethics programs (live or on-demand) will earn the NALFA recognition, Ethical Billing Litigator.  Ethical Billing Litigators pledge to adhere to ethical billing practices and reasonable attorney fee jurisprudence in their litigation practice.  Ethical Billing Litigators will receive a name-specific logo seal for display purposes and a certificate.

Membership Network Benefits

Our goal is to provide members of our network with the tools, resources, and opportunities to promote their fee expertise, highlight their work, and expand their knowledge based of ethical billing and reasonable fees.  Our benefits include:

  • Fellow Best Practices in Outside Legal Fee Analysis: NALFA members pledge to follow Best Practices in Outside Legal Fee Analysis.  Our best practice measures represent the professional mainstream of outside legal fee analysis.  In observing these peer review driven standards, our members can assure their clients that they will receive integrity in the process and reliability in the results.
  • New Client Referrals: For members, as an A.M. Best’s Client Recommended Expert Service Provider, law firms, insurers, and corporations (both fee-seeking and fee-challenging) routinely turn to NALFA on a range of large, complex attorney fee and legal billing matters.  We refer these clients to our membership, and in certain cases recommend specific members.  In addition to specific NALFA cases, we also provide members with client leads and opportunities.
  • Annual Hourly Rate Survey & Report: Every year, NALFA conducts an hourly rate survey of civil litigation in the U.S.   This is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive survey or study on hourly billing rates in litigation.  Upon publication, all members in our network (members, faculty, fellows, and subscribers) will receive a copy of the survey and report at no cost.
  • Professional Certificate of Qualification: Upon joining, NALFA members will receive a professional certificate of qualification.  This professional certificate shows that they are certified in their member category and follow Best Practices in Outside Legal Fee Analysis.  NALFA also provides a name-specific logo for members to display on their website and/or social media accounts.
  • Access to Our News Blog: All members of our network will get full access to our news blog.  Our news blog covers news on legal billing and attorney fee matters.  We provide the latest jurisprudence and scholarship on billing and fee matters from across the U.S.  NALFA routinely sends out email newsletters with links to our blog headlines.  This newsletter also features a section to highlight individual members.
  • Listing in Our Network Directory:  Members, faculty, and fellows will be listed on our online membership directory.  This listing contains all the relevant contact information.  NALFA also provides members with profile quotes.  These profile quotes are based on bio, CV, case summaries, and case materials provided to and verified by NALFA.
  • Promote News in Our News Blog: All members of our network can promote news in our News Blog, the only blog specifically devoted to attorney fee and legal billing issues from across the nation.  All members of our network can take advantage to reach a national audience by posting news, articles, and announcements in our News Blog, a heavily trafficked site and great resources for attorney fee and legal billing information.
  • Free CLE Programs: NALFA hosts CLE programs on attorney fee and legal billing topics.  All our CLE programs (live and on-demand) are free for members, faculty, and fellows.  This amounts to 12 hours of free educational programming in one year.  Our CLE programs are the perfect opportunity for members of our network to build on their knowledge base and remain proficient in legal fee analysis.
  • Podcast Interview Opportunities: NALFA hosts a popular podcast series, Litigators At Work (LAW).  NALFA interviews members of our network on their background, area of expertise, and on other attorney fee and legal billing issues.  These podcasts are done in a relaxed and casual format.  Our podcasts are featured in our emails, social media accounts, and available on our website and other platforms, and free to all.
  • Network Logo & Social Media Promotion:  All members of our network will receive a name-specific logo for display purposes.  Members of our network can use this logo on their website and social media accounts.  Throughout the year, NALFA will also promote individual members of our network on its social media accounts.
